These Foods and Drinks May Stain Your Teeth

11/10/2021

If you are a frequent wine drinker or an avid tea lover, you are probably aware of the impact they have on your teeth. Red wine and tea are two of the worst drinks that contribute to teeth staining. But that's not all. There are several other foods and drinks that are responsible for teeth staining. Let's find out!

Red Wine

It is perfectly normal and acceptable to enjoy a glass of wine occasionally. If consumed on a regular basis, you could easily lose your teeth to an awful (and ugly) stain for good. Unfortunately, no matter how good it may be, red wine is the most common cause of teeth stains.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea contain high concentrations of tannins – a substance that causes teeth staining. However, some research explains that adding milk to your tea or coffee can counteract the effects of staining.

Curry

Eating a lot of curry on a daily basis can have staining effects on the teeth due to its powerful colouring. But if you brush your teeth every time after you have curry, perhaps it won't have much of an impact.

Soy Sauce

The dark colouring of soy sauce can stay on your teeth for long periods. This classic addition to any cooked meal can cause your teeth to stain.

Cola

Cola is not just bad for the teeth; it has NO positive effects on our health. The acids in the drink, coupled with its dark colouring, can contribute to teeth staining and even wear them away. Cola should be a definite no-no to your meal.

Tomato-Based Sauce

Sure, tomato is highly nutritious and a great source of many benefits. But the sharp colours and its high acidity can cause the teeth to stain.

Fruit Juices

Fruit juices are liable to leave stains on our teeth if consumed regularly. Dark coloured juices, such as blueberry, cranberry, or grape juices, have higher chances of rotting and staining the teeth.

Beetroot

If you have ever had raw beetroot, you probably know how much it stains. Although beetroot is packed with healthy vitamins and minerals, there have been some claims about it being an offender for tooth staining.

Berries

As healthy as berries may be, they are another contributor to teeth stains. Berries, such as cranberries, grapes, and blueberries, are dark in colour and can cause the teeth to stain.

Energy Drinks

Sports and energy drinks cause the breakdown of the enamel layer (a protective barrier) of the teeth. This, in turn, results in stains that can be difficult to remove.

Your morning coffee or a handful of berries may be doing more than just providing energy and nutrition. It is best to consume the above foods and drinks in moderation to ensure that they don't affect your teeth.
